Devil's Head Trip #1 Report for 2003
31-May-2003 and 1-June-2003
by Kevin Larsen
This was a joint trip with our club and the RAMS, and was led by Rose Reynolds of the RAMS. We met at the fire road about 1/2 mile past Topaz Point (Virgins Bath for anyone with old maps). Rose led us to a spot about 3/4 of a mile to the southwest. We spread out over the area and began digging. Most of the day not much was found except for a few small Smokey Quartz points. Late in the afternoon Bob, myself, and K.C. where digging next to each other. At about the same time we all started finding some small points and some larger shards. Gradually the crystals (smokey quartz) started getting bigger the more we dug. By 6 PM we had found some crystals up to 4 inches long, and were digging mostly in thick red wet pocket mud. About this time it started to pour so we packed up quick and headed for the cars. We decided to come back on Sunday to see what else we could find in the pockets.
Sunday, K.C. and I got back to the diggings by 11 AM just when it started to rain again. Bob showed up a little later and the rain stopped. We were the only ones to come back on Sunday. For the rest of the day we extracted smokey quartz crystals almost non stop. The largest were about 6 inches long and 3 inches wide. We also all found some Fluorite cubes, and some plates of crystals, Clevelandite, and Microcline. When we left Bob had a full bucket full of specimens, K.C. and I had full packs ( I had already taken a full pack back to the car). We ended up with about 10 plates, about 60 smokeys in the 2-6 inch range, and 4 baggies full of smaller points (maybe about 200). Initally we thought we had a pretty good haul, however after cleaning the pieces they were not as nice as we had hoped. We should have a lot nice size crystals for grab bags.
