Devil's Head Trip #1 Report for 2004

A group of about 10 met across from the old logging road at 9AM Saturday. We walked a short distance (about 10 minutes) from where we parked to an area that we have had good luck with in previous years. This area in past years had produced hundreds on smokeys up to 6 inches, with some on a nice clevelandite matrix. Most of us stayed in this area to dig. This day however proved to be quite stingy. We found a few small pockets of small smokeys, some with clevelandite, but nothing of notable quality or size. One of the group who went off to dig in another area came back in the early afternoon and showed us a well formed smokey which looked to be about 3 in. long and about an 1-1/2 in. wide. Even though this trip did not produce anything to exited about, I still think this area has some good potential. Just before we left, in one of the holes we found some very well formed Microcline crystals up to 4 in long and 6 in across.
